John Carter’s MTF Trend Indicator for Thinkorswim?

Hey Pete,

I was wondering if you or anyone here knew if the Multiple Time Frame Trend indicator created by John Carter is available for ThinkorSwim. I did a quick Google search, and it appears someone is charging $150 for it. But I was curious if anyone knew of any other source for the study. My first thought was to post here and ask you, since you have done so much good work with Carter’s stuff.

Thanks,

-D

Hi Davide. I appreciate that you thought to post here and contact me about this topic. Regarding the MTF indicator begin sold by John Carter. Yes he does make it available for Thinkorswim. A friend of mine attended one of his classes where that indicator was provided along with the cost of admission. So yes, it is available for Thinkorswim from John Carter.

As to whether I have seen one posted somewhere else. I have not. Would I be interested in trying to reverse engineer that indicator and sell it myself? Absolutely not. See our terms and conditions for details: https://www.hahn-tech.com/terms-and-conditions/

If you feel that the MTF indicator from John Carter can help you make more profitable trades I encourage you to contact him and request to purchase it. It is for this reason that I maintain a high regard for the intellectual property of others. Thank you for your continued support!

Hey Pete, thanks for your quick reply. I didn’t realize the MTF Trend was proprietary. But after digging around a little further, I did find John Carter’s site where he sells the indicator there. Strange why the TTM Squeeze is free with Thinkorswim, but evidently his other indicators are not. Anyway, my mistake.

Thanks anyway, I appreciate it.

Yes, the TTM licensed studies on Thinkorswim were added back in 2010/2011 and shortly after that Thinkorswim stopped adding new Licensed studies to the platform. Not sure what the deal is with that. But that helps explain why some are available and others are not.

Thanks Pete. Well I went ahead and purchased the MTF Trend indicator from his website (Simpler Trading). So now the obvious question is: How to add it to the watchlist! ? Of course, you again are the first I would ask about this. Any ideas? It would be nice to have a similar setup as the TTM Squeeze, i.e., green/red background color.

Thoughts?

You cannot apply a MTF study to a watclist column. Each column is assigned a single time frame. So you have to add as many columns as you have time frames. But before you do that you need to know study he uses as the base of that MTF study. We can’t really handle this in the Q&A forum because we cannot publish the code for this without approval from John Carter.

Hi Davide and Pete. I have also purchased the MTF indicatior from Simpler Trading and am trying to run a scan on TOS with it. Having trouble having it just show stocks that are only showing where all the time frames are in allignment. Have you had any luck running scans on TOS with this indicator?

You cannot use multiple time frames in a single study filter on a scan. Each time frame must be added as it’s own separate study filter. If you want to see what that looks like, I wrote an article to show how to do this using the MTF MACD indicators I created. Here is a link to that article: https://www.hahn-tech.com/thinkorswim-mtf-macd-scan/

You cannot take a multiple time frame indicator and just drop it into scan.
